In 1922, The Duet Club purchased the seven-foot semi-concert Steinway grand piano.

It was ordered from New York, where Vladimir Horowitz advised the club on its purchase. Money was raised by Club members and Annual Piano Parties were held to support the maintenance of the piano.

Many well-known pianists have performed on the piano, including Horowitz, Neil Chotem, Valerie Tryon, Pierre Labashutz, Reginald Godden, Mona Bates, W. H. Hewlett, Bedford and Eby, Stuart Hamilton, and Gerald Moore.

The piano was originally housed on the Recital Hall stage at the Hamilton Conservatory of Music along with a second Steinway grand which was purchased from the Hendrie estate in 1933. This piano was known as the ‘red’ piano and was sold in 1955 when the black ebony piano was moved to Dalewood School auditorium.

The pianos were used for many student recitals as well as concerts of The Duet Club and the Faculty Club of the Conservatory. The piano was rented out on many occasions, once probably being in 1928 for the Horowitz concert in First United Church.

After its sojourn in Dalewood School, the piano was moved in 1973 to the New Studio Theatre in Hamilton Place, and again in 1985 to First Pilgrim Church. Its next move, in 1989 to the refurbished James St. Baptist Church, took place during the 100th anniversary of The Duet Club. After a five-year stay there, the piano was moved to its present location in the sanctuary of Melrose United Church where it is used by many wonderful upcoming pianists, as well as other musical groups in the city.
